Privacy Policy

[Last Update: 5/26/2023 – typo fixes and link verification check]

This privacy policy discloses the privacy practices for the Karen Diem website (https://www.karendiem.com), and email list for individuals concerned with how their Personally Identifiable Information is used online. As described in US privacy law and information security, Personally Identifiable Information is data that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. Please read our privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how we collect, use, protect or otherwise handle your information in accordance with our website. It will notify you of the following:

  • When do we collect information and what’s collected?
  • How do we use your information and with whom is it shared?
  • How can you control your own information or address concerns?
  • How is it secured?
  • Do cookies used?
  • How will privacy policy changes be communicated?
  • Are affiliate marketing links used?
When do we collect information?

We  collect the same information most websites collect when you’re browsing our site. The Karen Diem site uses common Internet technologies, like web server logs and cookies. What does this include? It includes browser, IP address, and things like that.

If you elect to email Karen, send a comment, or join the Karen Diem newsletter, we will collect additional information, such as your name (optional) and  email address.

When you leave comments, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection, and hold that information indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

How do  we use  your information?
  • To improve our website in order to better serve you.
  • To allow us to respond to your requests.
  • To send periodic emails (ONLY if newsletter subscription chosen)
  • To follow up after correspondence (live chat, email or phone inquiries)

You will not be contacted by email unless you contact us or sign up for emails. Emailing Karen or sending comments will not subscribe you to the newsletter or to any marketing materials. Only subscribing adds you to the newsletter.

We do not do direct marketing, phone calls, or customized online advertising. We do not specifically market to children under age thirteen.

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your Personally Identifiable Information. This does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving our users, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release information when it’s release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property or safety.

However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses.

How  can you control your own information?

You may opt out of any future contacts from us at any time. You can also contact us via the email address in our newsletters or contact form provided on our website to:

  • See what data we have about you, if any.
  • Change/correct any data we have about you.
  • Have us delete any data we have about you.
  • Express any concern you have about our use of your data
Mailing List Registration

To receive our emails, a user must first complete the registration form. During registration, users have to give certain information such as an email address and consent to join the mailing list. This information is used to contact you about the products and services you have expressed an interest in. To reduce the amount of mailings you receive, you may choose between a new release only notification or the monthly newsletter. The default is the monthly newsletter.

You can  always unsubscribe or change your level of notification. Every mailing list email contains an unsubscribe link at the bottom.

Third-Party Links

Occasionally, at our discretion, we may include or offer third-party products or services on our website. These third-party sites have separate and independent privacy policies. We have no responsibility or liability for the content and activities of these linked sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of any other site that collects personally identifiable information.

If you click a social media link or share an article, information may be shared per the social media link application’s privacy policy. As of our last review of this policy, it does not collect any personally-identifiable information. To view their policy, see https://sharethis.com/privacy/.

How is information secured?

We take reasonable precautions to protect your information by limiting access to it, using firewalls and other Internet security measures, and using trusted companies for web hosting, etc. The site is kept updated and scanned regularly for malware or viruses.

Are cookies used?

Yes, we do. “Cookies” are small files that stored on a site visitor’s hard drive through your Web browser (unless you have  turned off cookies). They enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance their experience on our site.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

This site utilizes Google Analytics. For more information on Google’s cookies specifically and/or to  turn  them off, see Google’s privacy policy.

Since browser is a little different, look at your browser’s Help Menu to learn the correct way to modify your cookies. If you turn cookies off, it shouldn’t affect browsing the site.
How will privacy policy changes be communicated?

Email list subscribers will receive changes to our privacy policies via a newsletter link.

Website visitors may visit the privacy policy linked at the bottom of every page.

Should a date breach occur, the site will post that information within two weeks of the site owner notification. Mailing list subscribers may get an emailed notice if data specific to  the mailing list is impacted.

Are affiliate marketing links used?

Yes. Karen Diem receives a small fee whenever a user follows a link to Amazon and makes a purchase. Linked items are only those items that would have been discussed anyway on the site/mailing list. We don’t recommend things in exchange for money, and we do not see who makes the purchase on Amazon, credit card info, or anything personally identifiable.

If you feel that we are not abiding by this privacy policy, you should contact us immediately via our contact page.
